Beyond Earth Hour

Earth Hour is not limited to a 60-minute power outage around the world; Its purpose is to raise awareness about the importance of making simple decisions that can have a significant impact.

Every March 23, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., people in all cities around the world turn off their lights, including buildings of administrative institutions, museums and emblematic buildings, to support a movement that fights for the well-being of the planet.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has created an initiative called Earth Hour with the aim of increasing public awareness about the importance of protecting the environment. This blackout is more significant now than ever: according to WWF, the planet's temperature has increased by up to 1.1°C, indicating alarming overheating. By 2030, the temperature is expected to reach 1.5°C.

The blackout is a way to draw the attention of the world's population, by raising awareness to combat the problem of climate change. Such a small gesture can change the world.

We must not forget that the rise in the Earth's temperature makes weather phenomena increasingly violent and aggressive, causing great damage such as floods, fires or strong winds.

What to do during Earth Hour?

We can do many things during the hour without using light:

  1. If you live near the sea, join the beach cleanup. Grab a cloth bag, encourage family or friends, and go clean the beach of trash.

  2. Prepare a zero-waste dinner. Everything can be used. And if it is with company, even better!

  3. Find out about the events your city is celebrating during the Global Blackout and join them.

  4. Go for a walk. Sometimes we need to stop for a while to be able to appreciate the world around us.

  5. Draw, paint, craft. You don't need to be a professional to make art. Let your creative side out.

  6. Take that book that you have on the shelf collecting dust and read it. Why wait? Now you have an excuse to start it.

During Earth Hour, it is crucial to consider the importance of caring for and improving our earth, as well as the importance of the small details.

What can companies do during the Global Blackout?

Businesses can turn off bright lights and billboards to help convey a message of commitment and social responsibility during Earth Hour. In this way, energy use is reduced and effective practices are implemented to save resources and benefit the environment.

It is essential to note that companies, particularly multinationals, have the ability to accelerate the clean energy transition and produce and consume resources sustainably, promoting green transformative change. This is particularly important for the food, energy and infrastructure sectors.
